Young People

When selling the idea to young people it is important that the balance between excitement, expectations, (both staff and young people) curiosity, and value are met.  They should also feel that they have a role in the planning stage.  The use of powerpoint presentations, adventure videos, and pictures are useful to act as a stimulus.

Ensure that students understand our Behaviour Policy

 

What you need to tell parents:

  • cost, what this covers, payment date.
  • date of expedition.
  • Staff involved and their roles
  • details of travel arrangements both to and from the centre and during the expedition.
  • insurance details.
  • accommodation style.
  • aims/objectives of the course. The general programme for the week.
  • the expectations required of the young people, and acceptable codes of behaviour. Course of action to be taken in the event of a problem.
  • address of centre, emergency telephone number.
  • name and tel No of member of staff who will be at school, who can be contacted in the case of problem.
  • personal kit and equipment required by the young people, and recommendation for amount of pocket money.
  • qualifications and experience of centre staff.
  • fire regulations, along with medical and safety procedures at the centre.

Parents to be informed that there will be times when their child might be unsupervised, i.e. shopping, simple map exercises, social time. It should be stressed however, that these times will be limited, children will not be on their own, and there will be a contact point and guidelines given in the event of a problem.

 

What you need from parents:

  • medical information.
  • any medical history or condition which might affect their child.
  • a 24 hour contact number in case of an emergency.
  • dietary information connected with the students health and religion.
